Dojran – St. Elijah (Св. Илија) church

St. Elijah (Св. Илија) church in Star Dojran was built in 1848 with contributions by the local population. The main architect was Gjorge Novakov (Ѓорѓе Новаков) from village Papradishte near Veles.

After the construction, the church with a decree from the sultan was given to the Constantinople Patriarchate (which was under Greek influence) and later was given to the Bulgarian Exarchate.

During the First World War, the city of Dojran was on the actual front line and was completely destroyed. The church St. Elijah was hit by a fire, which burned a large part of the interior and the roof.

The church had stayed ruined for a long time with its walls bearing the marks of World War I grenades. In 2003, a complete reconstruction of the church started.
